NCukrzyca jest jedną z najczęściej leczonych w warunkach podstawowej opieki zdrowotnej chorób przewlekłych. Większość chorych na cukrzycę znajdujących się pod opieką lekarzy rodzinnych to pacjenci z cukrzycą typu 2 przyjmujący leki doustne. Jednym z głównych doustnych preparatów przeciwcukrzycowych jest metformina, lek znany od prawie pięćdziesięciu lat. Podstawowym wskazaniem do jej przyjmowania jest cukrzyca typu 2 skojarzona z otyłością. Od kilku lat metformina przeżywa swój renesans, a wyniki ostatnio opublikowanych badań wykazując duże bezpieczeństwo jej stosowania sugerują możliwość rozszerzenia wskazań do jej przyjmowania na grupę osób z upośledzoną tolerancją glukozy (impaired glucose tolerance, IGT). |
